Benjamin Paz’s COE Win Celebrates Craft, Community, and Legacy

Benjamin Paz’s COE Win Celebrates Craft, Community, and Legacy

In the highlands of Santa Bárbara, Honduras, Benjamin Paz Muñoz stands as a beacon of excellence, blending tradition with innovation. Since 2018, he has consistently earned top awards in the prestigious Cup of Excellence (COE), establishing himself as a leading figure in the world of specialty coffee. His passion and dedication to quality have not only set new standards for Honduran coffee but have also played a pivotal role in bringing international recognition to the country’s specialty coffee industry.

Through his success, the global coffee community has come to appreciate the rich potential of Honduran coffee, and just as importantly, they’ve come to admire the man behind it. Benjamin's dedication has empowered his local community, opening doors to broader markets and new opportunities.

But it’s not just his expertise that makes an impact. It’s who he is. With his genuine love for what he does, Benjamin has a way of bringing people together, from fellow farmers to international buyers. He’s not only a respected leader in specialty coffee, but a beloved presence in his community and a force for meaningful change in the lives of those around him.

In 2024, Benjamin once again earned top honors in the COE with his Geisha from La Salsa, his farm perched 1,680 meters above sea level. Scoring an impressive 91.21 points, this washed-process Geisha is a vibrant expression of the care and expertise that defines Benjamin’s work. It is a coffee that speaks to both place and process: elegant, layered, and deeply satisfying.

What makes this coffee truly special is how it captures Benjamin’s approach to farming. It starts with gentle floral aromas and black tea notes, followed by a bright citrus and peach-like juiciness. A touch of maple syrup-like flavor adds smooth depth, while white grape brings a clean, vibrant finish. It’s a balanced and enjoyable cup that speaks to the care behind it.

But his legacy extends far beyond his own farm. Through his work with San Vicente Exports, Benjamin plays a vital role in supporting other local producers, helping them improve their practices and access international markets. He sees his success not as a solo achievement, but as a shared journey. Many of the producers he mentors now stand proudly beside him as symbols of coffee excellence, their growth a reflection of his leadership.

Benjamin remains grateful for the support of IHCAFE and the Cup of Excellence team, who help build meaningful bridges between producers and buyers around the world. These relationships, he says, make the journey all the more rewarding. Looking ahead, Benjamin is optimistic, not just for his own farm, but for the entire coffee community in Santa Bárbara.

His 2024 La Salsa Geisha is more than an award-winning coffee. It’s the story of a farmer who believes in the power of connection, of quality, and of always striving to do better. Every cup is a glimpse into his world and an invitation to taste the best of Honduras.
