Have you recently become a Keurig Mini owner but are unsure of how exactly to use it? If so, you’re in the right place! Coffee makers that work with coffee pods are often a real lifesaver for those with busy schedules, but if you haven’t had one before, using it for the first few times can be quite confusing. That’s why we’re here, though. Below, you will find all you need to know about how to work a Keurig Mini - and trust us when we say once you try it, it won’t take long for you to become a pro at preparing coffee in your coffee machine!
Before the First Use
The first thing you want to do is take your new coffee machine out of the box, which typically contains Keurig Mini plus instructions.
After taking your coffee machine out of the box, remove all of the packing tape and other packaging on it. The cord is hidden in the cord storage, so you need to remove it from there and plug it into a power socket. Press the power button - it should illuminate, indicating that your coffee machine is on.
Now, you need to do a cleansing brew. Grab a mug, fill it with water, and pour it into the water reservoir - the amount should be over the MIN line and below the MAX line. Place the mug on the drip tray and lift and lower the handle - the brew indicator should flash, signaling that it's ready to be used.

Press the brew button - the indicator will light solid and then start pulsating as the coffee maker begins to heat up. After about two minutes, the indicator should change to solid again, and the actual brew will start with water being disposed into the mug you placed before. Once the “coffee” is done, you can get rid of it by, for example, pouring it into the sink or toilet.
This is a process that needs to be done only once before you start using your Keuring Mini coffee machine.
Keurig Mini - How to Use It to Make Coffee
Once your machine is up and running, preparing a delicious cup of coffee in it is a piece of cake - and it all starts with choosing the K-Cups. An unarguable advantage of coffee machines that operate using coffee cups is that they allow you to try a variety of different flavors without going out of your way to prepare them - and that’s precisely the case here.
If you already have the K-Cups you want to use, then you can move on to the preparation, which is pretty much the same as the abovementioned cleansing brew, with the main difference being that you’re actually going to add coffee this time.
Take a mug in which you want to have your beverage, fill it with water, and pour it into the reservoir. Lift the handle, and place your K-Cup of choice into the pot holder. Lower the handle, allowing the needle located on the lid to puncture the coffee pod, and press the brew button. Give the coffee machine a couple of minutes to prepare your delicious cup of joe, and you’re done!
You can turn off your machine manually, but if you forget to do it, it will automatically turn off after 90 seconds. Once your beverage is done, you can recycle your K-Cup. Avoid closing the lid so the pod container can dry out.

How to Use a Keurig Mini - Maintenance
We’ve already talked about how to work Keurig Mini coffee maker, so now let’s talk about what to do to make sure it retains pristine condition for a long time.
Regular maintenance is crucial in ensuring that your coffee maker lasts you for years to come - and, fortunately, in the case of the Keurig Mini, it doesn’t take much to keep your coffee maker in great condition. It all comes down to two things - cleaning and descaling, and you’ll find Keurig Mini instructions for both of them below.
All the spills and splatters should be wiped away as soon as possible, while the individual components like the mug tray, coffee pod holder, and water tank should be cleaned at least once a month. As for descaling, that should be done once every few months. Keep in mind, though, that if you have hard water, you will have to do it more frequently.
Cleaning the Keurig Mini
- Make sure that your coffee machine is unplugged before you start cleaning.
- Remove all the elements that can be removed, like the drip tray and the K-cup holder.
- Clean the needles, but be careful, especially when cleaning the exit needle, as since it is very sharp, you can cut yourself. Take a paperclip, straighten it, and loosen any coffee grounds that got stuck there.
- Wash the components you removed using warm water and soap. Rinse and dry them with a lint-free microfiber cloth. Then, take a damp cloth and wipe the water tank valve connection, as well as the exterior of the machine.
- Reassemble your Keurig and run one (or more if needed) cleansing brew to get rid of the stale coffee taste.
Descaling Your Keurig
When you descale your machine, you’re removing any hardened minerals that might have formed in it. The whole process is pretty straightforward, as it’s almost the exact same as running a cleansing brew. The main difference, however, is that you use water mixed with a descaling solution rather than just plain water.
As for which descaling solution to choose - it’s always best to go with the manufacturer’s official product. That way, you can be sure that it is suitable for your coffee maker. You can also opt for a DIY solution by using distilled white vinegar.
The Bottom Line
Although learning how to operate Keurig Mini might seem intimidating at first for those who haven’t used a coffee machine before, it’s actually a pretty straightforward process. Give it a few tries, and before you know it you’ll become a pro at it.
In the meantime, don’t hesitate to take a look at our K-Cups - one thing about coffee pods is that they allow you to try flavors you probably never thought about having in your coffee before without much hassle on your part. Take advantage of it!
