So, we put together information and answers to your top 8 most asked Keurig® machine questions. Take a look below - you might find the solution to your problems!

1. What is the best type of water to use for brewing my Keurig®?

“cool

No matter how you brew your coffee, water is going to have a significant effect on the end results - Your Keurig® is no exception. Running hard tap water through your Keurig® can leave a tough-to-clean trail of mineral deposits. Alternatively, softened water can leave hardened salt deposits behind that can prevent your coffee and tea from brewing correctly - This can even ruin the taste of your coffee. Your best bet is to use filtered water for coffee brewing. Water that’s been filtered of minerals and other elements will not only give your single serve machine a longer life span, but your coffee will taste even better.

2. Where are those grinds in my cup coming from?

“coffee

Have you been finding floating coffee in your cup lately and been wondering where they’re coming from? There’s a good possibility that the needle that penetrates the single use cups has become clogged and needs to be cleaned. Luckily, there’s a quick fix for this. Just follow these steps!

  • Turn off your machine and unplug it from its power source.
  • By reaching under your coffee-dispensing nozzle, you can then press up on the bottom of the funnel. This will allow the coffee pod holder to pop out.
  • Take your pod holder and separate it into two pieces, where you’ll find the top section contains the needle you’re looking for.
  • Using a straightened paper clip, carefully place it in the tube on the underside of the pod holder and use it to clear any obstruction. Watch out during this portion of the process because the needle is sharp.
  • Once the needle is clear, wash your coffee pod holder thoroughly with soap and water and clean your drawer.

Once the steps above have been completed, you should have a much cleaner brew!

3. What do I do when my brew is short?

“empty

When you’re expecting a steaming hot cup of coffee, and instead are met with only half as much as you expected, it could be due to a few different reasons. Here are the most common (and easily fixed!):

  • The needle could be clogged. Reference needle cleaning instructions above.
  • It could be time to descale your brewer.
  • You have a faulty brew basket. If this is the case, contact Keurig® to discuss replacement.

4. Can I put milk in my brewer?

“milk

Definitely not. Running milk through your Keurig® is a quick way to clog your machine. Instead, try using milk pods or heat and froth your milk separately. Keurig® even has a new K-Cafe® that has a built-in frother!

5. Do I need to change how I brew at a higher altitude?

“coffee

In short, yes. Your coffee pods can be affected at higher altitudes, resulting in an inferior brew. Keurig® recommends that you pre-puncture the bottom of your plastic cup by pushing down on the pod slowly after placing it in the holder and before brewing - this helps prevent your pods from rupturing. Lowering your brew temperature can also ensure a more even brew when you live at a higher altitude. The Keurig® 2.0 series has a high altitude setting that can help.

6. Which of my brewer’s components is dishwasher safe?

“cleaning

According to Keurig®? None. They recommend all parts are hand washed for best results.

7. How often is descaling of my coffee machine necessary?

“neon

Over time, your Keurig® can build-up a large number of mineral deposits, which can affect your brewing and your machine’s overall performance. It’s recommended that you descale your machine every 3-6 months. Depending on how hard your home or office’s water, you may need to perform this function more often. You can find everything you need to know about descaling here.

8. How much power does my Keurig® use?

“vintage

Your Keurig® uses the most power upon starting and performing initial heating - about 1,500 watts. Following the initial start, it maintains about 200-400 watts in usage while managing heat.
